Modernising a Custom ERP & Inventory Platform
Handled during a 1 month consultancy trial-partnership
Problem
A growing importer and retro-game part supplier had developed a custom internal inventory and ERP solution to support warehouse operations and online sales across multiple store fronts.
As the business grew, limitations began to emerge around multi-user and remote access, data management, maintainability, and long-term scalability of this key ERP system.
The Existing System
Approach
A review was conducted across workflows, system architecture, data storage, and operational requirements – aligning with the client at their level.
Key risks were identified around shared data access across storefronts, application development and deployment, access to physical systems remotely.
Solution
A roadmap was developed to support the transition to scale the solution for internal use, the key topics for this were:
- Version control to manage internal application
- Deployment to allow remote access to ERP system and local network for integrating local physical data storage solutions
- Move away from google drive storage to dedicated optimized data stores
- Move to eventual consistency patterns and single source of truth for inventory state
- Establishing foundations for future feature development, modern event driven concepts and deployment patterns
Outcome
The business gained a clearer path towards a scalable operational platform capable of supporting future growth, the client gained agency to develop their system independently with future development plans, solved a key data synchronization issue across different store fronts, more secure inventory, customer and sales data management.
